Choice Ireland welcome decision to make emergency contraception
available without prescription

After campaigning on the issue for many years, Choice Ireland are today welcoming the decision by the Boots pharmacy chain to make emergency contraception available in pharmacies without prescription.

Commenting, spokesperson Sinead Ahern said, "Over the last century there has been a long history of restricting Irish women’s access to contraception. Irish women have for too long faced unnecessary barriers accessing contraception. Emergency contraception is widely available over the counter across Europe and across the border in the Six Counties. The need for a prescription simply places additional delays and costs on women in a situation where time truly is of the essence."

Commenting further, Ahern said, "We welcome this decision as a big step forward for women’s access to sexual and reproductive health services and urge other pharmacies to follow suit."
