TV3 highlight issue of backstreet abortion

An investigation by TV3 has revealed how cheap and easy it is to buy illegal abortion pills online.

More and more Irish women are doing so despite warnings from experts about the health risks involved.

In 2009 alone Customs and the Irish Medicines board seized at least 1216 packages containing abortifacient drugs have been seized upon entry into Ireland according to a Freedom of Information request.

The seizures include Misoprostol, a drug which was widely used in Portugal to induce illegal abortions prior to legalisation of abortion in 2008, and RU486, a drug used to carry out medical abortions in the US and throughout Europe.

And with more and more websites offering these and other drugs, many of which are unlicensed and provide no aftercare services or counselling support - the risk for women taking these drugs is all too apparent.
