Many women in the United States have been victims of unwanted pregnancy. Thus, many of them undergo abortion.

Most of the women who have an unwanted pregnancy would rather undergo abortion in their first trimester. But for some, they undergo second trimester abortion if they have a late decision on whether to undergo abortion or not. And, according to some researches, women who undergo second trimester abortion are forced because of various reasons.

According to the study conducted by Laurence B. Finer and other researchers from The Guttmacher Institute in New York, around 58 percent of women who have undergone the second trimester abortion have wished they would have just undergone abortion in their first semester. Moreover, the study conducted by Dr. Eleanor A. Drey MD and other researchers from the Obstetrics & Gynecology showed that women who have undergone second trimester already have decided to undergo first trimester abortion but they were just delayed for various reasons.

The study of Finer involved 1209 abortion patients that were treated and operated in 11 major providers of abortion. Also, they have conducted in-depth interviews on 38 women who have been through abortion. He and his team studied the processing of getting abortion and they gathered reports of women who have experienced delays in getting abortion services. The team’s rationale is to know and understand the difficulties of women in availing on a particular abortion service.

The results showed that 58 percent of the women who have undergone second trimester abortion wanted to undergo abortion in their first trimester. The most common reasons were the potential patients had a difficult time of arranging the said abortion with a percentage of 59 percent. Also, 39 percent of women have a difficulty in deciding whether to undergo abortion or not. Lastly, 36 percent of women don’t know that they are actually pregnant after all.

Meanwhile, the study of Drey had somehow similar results. Their team’s studies involved 398 abortion patients. The respondents were interviewed using an audio computer-assisted self-interviewing. Their study’s rationale is still the same that of Finer’s and his team’s study. They would like to determine the factors that would lead women to delay in availing abortion services and eventually leading to undergoing second trimester abortion. The results of the study showed that 58 percent of women underwent second trimester because of delay in getting insurance and abortion services. Moreover, the women had less knowledge that they are actually pregnant already.
